01/12/2011 - Barco: ‘The ESI-CIT Group house style for coding and multi-skilled project team was a real win’
Barco, recognized as world class leader for visualization solutions, had consulted ESI-CIT Group in the early days of product industrialization. Barco had in the past period introduced LED-based video walls as a market answer to exsiting UHP videowalls. Videowalls used for 24/24h operations, where color stability and optical performance are key to market success. Today you can explore the full range of LED-based videowalls on

It was key for the industrialization plan to have product-specific test solutions, installed in a worldwide distributed manufacturing model. For this, Barco had to manage up to 12 key projects to allow for this industrialization on top of other project work. Far too much for the internal test & industrialization teams. At that point, ESI-CIT Group was asked to join the project.
ESI-CIT Group joined the project in the early days of product development and was selected to engineer and deploy 2 key test solutions: a calibration & verification test setup for OL-xxx video wall cubes and a LED tester for optical verification.
Christope Theys (Manager Test Industrialization) states his experiences in this project as follows:
“Both projects had to start at the early phases of product design in order to meet the project milestones. At the time, the calibration and verification methods where still under full development as well as the product web-based API's. We started by focusing on engineering the mechanic and instrumentation part of both projects. This way we could win project time, but had also to remain fully aware of the risks of late project requirement updates. The ESI-CIT Group house style for coding and multi-skilled project team was a real win. Soon we could demonstrate code design, CAD design drawings to the R&D teams at Barco for early verification of test tools. Once we had the first OL-xxx product samples, the final realization tracks of both projects could be realized quite quickly. FAT tests were done on site at ESI-CIT Group, OSAT test where done on the ramp-up line at Barco Germany.
The ESI-CIT Group project manager prepared the full deployment as well as the operator training. The final installation in the production process (in Italy and India) was really ‘low-risk’.
Today the Barco main production lines for LED-based video walls rely on the ESI-CIT Group-engineered tools.
The first project was about the delivery of a tester for optical verification. This is an automated in-line production tool used in Italy. The product tests LED chains (cooled modules with Re, green, blue LED’s on it) using an integrating sphere to measure the light spectrum and derive absolute luminous flux (lumen), color point and dominant wavelength. The tool measures the temperature stability and forward voltage of each LED as well and verifies all results against the specified values.
The second tool is a calibration & verification test setup for OL-xxx video wall cubes.
This again is an in-line production tool, this time used in India. The tool is used in the final testing and calibration of fully functional rear projection LED video walls.
