01/12/2011 - Kurt Aerts: Operations Manager

Kurt Aerts has an engineering degree in electronics. But he said goodbye to the real project work three years ago. At that time he accepted the position of Operations Manager at ESI-CIT Group, a job that since the acquisition of CIT has only grown bigger and more and more time consuming.
Kurt: "At times I am asked to hand a helping hand in a project, but those times are becoming rare. These days I have more than my hands full managing all projects that are running in the organization. "
And at times that can be up to eighty. Kurt directs them all, assembling the project teams, ensuring the timely delivery and intervening when problems arise.
Kurt: "That usually happens when two projects overlap, or when several projects demand the same expertise. Then I decide, after consulting internally and with the customers of course, which project takes priority. For other problems we have the project leader that monitors and corrects on a day-to-day basis. A project leader is an engineer who besides his main occupation (Mechanics, Electronics, Software, ...) also takes the responsibility for his project(s) and makes sure they are it is kept on track. In all this, leadership is a key attribute.'
The projects within ESI-CIT Group range from small one-day projects to building complex machine parks that can run over multiple years with a large group of engineers in the project team.
To keep track of everything in a proper way to follow ESI-CIT Group has in the past developed its own tracking software.
Kurt: "But with the growth of the organization, the need for a more comprehensive tool to track projects, assemble the teams, manage the budgets and make sure that projects are delivered on time has grown along with it. We have therefore rolled out a new ERP system, Profit (AFAS), as of August 1st of this year. With this tool we can work internationally and multi-company in a much easier fashion, which has become a necessity within the ESI-CIT Group. "
